A two-part paper addresses the issue of rotary kiln design. Kiln size, along with functional parameters, have an effect on throughput, clinker quality and heat consumption, thus it is important to be correctly known.

This first part gives various fast, but not accurate, size calculation methods, which will require only minimal inputs. Such little requirements are encountered in basic design or as an early step of a more accurate procedure. Developed models will be tested and validated with the aid of various industrial data.
