The performance of the modern concrete cannot be considered only by its mechanical resistance, but also by a group of its proprieties, that obviously includes this characteristic of the concrete, to which are added, by case, the chemical and biochemical resistance to aggressive agents, the moderate or low hydration heat, the freeze – thaw resistance, toughness and impermeability. Limiting performance to a high mechanical resistance also restricts its field of application as durable concrete; under such circumstances, the Portland high final strength cements could five performing answers. The interest for using such cements was, in this context, of high priority, but less and less satisfactory and motivated. Gathering more and more information and achievements with regard to cements for durable concretes, that took place in the last half of the 20th century, and more especially, at the beginning of the new century, showed the importance of the composite cements (Portland cement – slag – pozzolanas – additives and admixtures) and determined attracting of these into manufacture, by using them for obtaining durable concretes. This paper presents the information obtained in our country in the last four decades, in which the authors of present paper were involved, but, for illustration purposes, also investigations carried out by researchers from other countries – especially in the last few years, suggesting current demands and future tendencies.
